Ludwig Vandevelde

Ludwig Vandevelde, (°Antwerp 1957) debutet on the international art-scene in 1984. His work has always been strongly influenced by  the ‘conceptual and minimal’ art-tendencies of that period. A strong relationship towards ‘arte povera’ has often been noticed. But its unique position in the field of contemporary art is undoubtedly the embeddiment of his work in the painterly and sculptural tradition of renaissance and barok. His use of wood, the mastering of the sculpture techniques of the barok, his  explicit referencies to art  history places his work in a long historic tradition. But his critical artistic research on the status of the object and the place of tradition in the field of contemporary art makes him undoubtedly a contemporary artist.
